Following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been running as is. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system however, Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island until the present. Java Edition will soon require you to have a Microsoft account in order to play. However, you'll still receive an unrestricted cape.

You'll need to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system in early 2021. Mojang says this is primarily to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide enhanced security, however it could also lead to improved parental control, chat and invitation blocking, and account integration with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Mojang has no plans to change Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain completely separate games. You'll continue to be able to play using your current Java username, though if you're creating a Microsoft account for the first time, you may need to change your account's name. If you already have a Microsoft account in the first place, you'll be able merge your Minecraft sign in right away.

Mojang offers a cape, which was once the most sought-after Java Edition item: to ease the transition. Participating in the migration process will give you a free cape. While it won't have the Minecon exclusive designs but it will allow everyone to feel a bit royal.

Although nothing is likely to change, players do have concerns. Among them, the more restrictive terms of service by Microsoft could result in bans and could result in players being denied access to Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the official announcement and FAQ. We'll see how it turns out in 2021, in the beginning of the year. irc101 Chit Chat Chit Chat
