SIM lock:

A SIM lock, NETWORK LOCK, CARRIER LOCK, imei lock or (Master) subsidy lock serves as a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM cellular phones by producers for use by carriers to restrict the use of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is unlike a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM restrictions.Unlocking a smartphone is virtually universally legal. At the same time, it's legal for carriers to force SIM locks for certain periods of time, varying by region.

Unlocking Technology:

Typically, a locked mobile will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, asking for the unlock code. On recent phone models operating on Google android software, the phone will show a message saying “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it's network locked. Windows phones are going to display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Other handsets could display alternative messages including "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or sometimes the handset will probably present a message stating that it's locked. When a valid code is keyed in, the phone will display "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

More often than not a SIM-locked mobile is marketed at a significantly reduced cost than an unlocked one mainly because the supplier plans income via its service. SIM locks are used on lower priced (pay-as-you-go) units, while bargains on more expensive handsets demand a subscription that provides guaranteed income. Unlocked mobile phones have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

Lots of organizations provide a imei cell phone unlocking service . This service needs people that want to unlock a mobile to give their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also require the country and cellular network the handset is locked to, sometimes sent via email or entered on their web site. The organization will then supply (at a cost to you) a unlock code for the device.
