Benefits of Setting Short-Term Goals

You wanted to play sports regularly, but still couldn't find enough motivation? Sometimes no matter how much we want to achieve something, we are not able to stick to what we have set. And the obstacle here is probably not the lack of strong will, but the way we set ourselves goals. In this article, you will learn how to set your goals so that they are easy and enjoyable to achieve. The technique I will be discussing is setting short-term goals. A technique that is sometimes underestimated.

Life without a goal is like a ship without a helmsman. It is swimming somewhere, drifting across the ocean, but the destination is unknown.

You build your "another-self"
Research by neuropsychologists has confirmed that when we set ourselves a goal to achieve, we behave as if it were already part of us. The brain cannot fully distinguish between what we have and what we want to have, and it believes that the desired effect is already a part of ourselves. For example, if we fail to achieve our goal, we feel pain as if we have lost something.

The brain helps us then to achieve our goals by rewarding us for our pursuit of them. Therefore, visualizing the goal already achieved and the pleasurable feelings associated with it are so important in the whole process, because it intensifies the mechanism that occurs in our brains.

Unwittingly you can achieve even greater goals
When you have a goal with a time limit, the chances of achieving it drastically rise. A short-term goal may be the first step of a journey that leads to a larger one. For example, if you want to go work remotely and travel around the world, it would be advisable to learn about ways of making money online, digital nomading or starting learning a new language. The fact is, that sometimes your short-term goals, although unrelated to the main one, can still contribute to your success. For example, learning how to save money to buy a new PC can help you in the future when you will, for example, move out and live on your own abroad.

They are easy
One of the important element of SMART goals is an "A" letter, that stands for "achievable" or "attainable". Of course, you have to exert yourself and push yourself to the limit but remain realistic. The problem with ambitious goals is that they tend to be overwhelming and at some point even daunting. You have to be able to answer at least these 2 questions:

How can I accomplish this goal?
How realistic is it taking into consideration financial factors, time, energy and support of others?
It's rather hard to answer this questions when our goals are like "I want to become a boss of the biggest marketing company in my country". But is much easier in goal like "I want to send daily 10 cold emails more during next week to increase my sales".

Set them as many as you can
Short-term goals are easy to track and to achieve. That's why they are very satisfied and can reshape your life. Take a look at the following goals and set your own:

Take a language lesson
Buy a new book that explains the subject you are interested in
Buy a gym membership
Buy a workout outfit
Read one page of a book each day
Show up to work on time
I want to write this essay by next Wednesday.
Today, from 16.00 to 18.00, I will rework Chapter X an accounting manual as a preparation for the examination
As you can see it's very easy. Know your limitations but push yourself also further. In short time you will feel a great satisfaction of adding countless of bricks that will build your future.
